It’s a deal! Cape Town’s restaurant specials

Two for the price of one, free meals and discounts – sound good? Winter months and early spring months are restaurant specials months. Why? Capetonians are a funny bunch, as soon as it’s cold, we hibernate. So, I’ve compiled a list of restaurants in Cape Town currently holding specials.

It seems like Monday is the perfect day to take advantage of these deals. Just in time! 🙂

If you’ve been to any of the above mentioned Cape Town hang-outs let us know about your experience!

Burgers at The Dog’s Bollocks

What do you get when you have a driveway, huge burgers, craft beer, jazz music and an owner with a persona just a big as the burgers? Yeah, The Dog’s Bollocks (no, it’s not a bad joke).
The Dog’s Bollocks is a small neighbourhood burger joint in Gardens. It’s situated in a covered driveway next to a mechanic so it looks pretty discrete unless you know what you’re looking for. Inside it’s furnished with old-school wire garden furniture with blankets for when it gets a bit chilly.

Only 50 burgers are served each night so they have a different ordering system to a normal burger joint. When the whole table arrives, you write one name and the number of patrons on a chalk board (it’s actually a door) opposite the open plan kitchen. When Nigel, the owner and cook, gets to your order the whole table orders their burgers. Wait ten minutes and your burger is ready. Now, this is not just a burger, it is enormous and it’s kinda like a ‘would you like some burger patty with that salad?’ situation. It takes a while to figure out how to eat it. After watching other people tackle the monster of a burger I thought I had an eating game plan. Ahhh, wrong. I ended up nibbling the overflowing lettuce like a rabbit until I got to the actual burger. They’re goooood!

It’s not just the burgers that make The Dog’s Bollocks a must visit, it’s the atmosphere and character of the place and the owner Nigel, but don’t expect luxury, it’s not meant to be luxurious.

Ask for a glass of water and you get the reply ‘See the wooden box? There are glasses in there. See the bathroom over there? There is water in there’, but don’t get me wrong, Nigel and his burger peeps are super friendly.

The Dog’s Bollocks also has its own craft beer. It’s something that shouldn’t be missed.

So, all in all, it’s a great evening out. It’s different, the burgers are good and they’re reasonably priced at R60 each for all burgers given their size.
Note: It probably is not the greatest place for a first date – there won’t be a second. There is no attractive way to eat a huge burger.
