Jou Ma Se…Comedy Club

This post’s title may seem like an insult – it’s not (not in this context anyway). Jou Ma Se Comedy Club is the creation of one of Cape Town’s very best comedians, Kurt Schoonraad. You’ll recognise him as one of Cape Town’s best, but he’s got something special going at Players Restaurant & Bar at The River Club in Observatory. This is the home of Jou Ma Se Comedy Club.
JMSCC "logo"Thursday was quite a chilly night, some hail even, but inside The River Club the laughter is loud. It’s obvious people have forgotten about what’s happening outside.
Kurt focusses on giving upcoming comedians a chance to show Cape town what they’ve got to offer. Three of these comedians are UCT students; Oliver Booth, Dalin Oliver and newcomer Schalk Bezuidenhout. Thursday’s line-up included Tracey Klass, Oliver Booth, open mic comedians Crescendo Louw and Wesley Cockrell and then the headliner for the evening Gareth Woods. Added to this entertaining line-up were surprise guests Martin Jonas (you’ll recognise him from TV ads) and Loyiso Gola (Late Night News with Loyiso Gola).

To add to your evening of fun you can enjoy a bite to eat while enjoying the comedy. During the early evening in the summer months I can imagine the view from the Club must be amazing as it flows out onto the immaculate golf course.
Jou Ma Se Comedy Club won’t be at The River Club for much longer though. Kurt and his team are onto bigger and better things. As of 1 November Jou Ma Se Comedy Club will entertain Cape Town from the city’s greatest tourist attraction, the V&A Waterfront. The Club will operate from the Old Pumphouse.

When speaking to Mr Schoonraad himself he’s clearly got it all worked out. With the V&A being the attraction it is he is hoping to expose South African talent to the foreign market with the aim of creating partnerships with comedy clubs around the world. Kurt is also hoping to bring a jazzy element to the new club. Cape Town’s youth is very keen on jazz music and he wishes to showcase local music talents too. Jazz and comedy – a great Capetonain combination!
Be sure to check out Jou Ma Se Comedy Club, whether it’s now at The River Club or in summer at The Pumphouse.
Tickets: R80 adults, R40 students with valid student card

Celebrating All Things Pink! – Pink Coffee Boutique

How about some tea to warm you up in this cold weather? Try out the Pink Coffee Boutique – and for those who just can’t grow up (like me) they have milkshakes in glass bottles too! Whaaat!?

thesweetestlittlething

pink-4

In the residential area of Kenilworth, lies a hidden gem – Pink Coffee Boutique, situated at 46 Goldbourne Road, the perfect tea date is waiting to happen.  Although the house may seem quaint from outside, a creative packaging company operates out of the front room (almost a reason to visit in itself!), and the coffee shop takes up the remaining space inside and spills outside onto a covered patio adorned with pink bunting. Thus patrons are able to pick up some great gifts and unique home décor items after they have enjoyed their tea. At Pink! everything is done a little old-school, from the décor – vintage, shabby chic,  to the cubed sugar, and milkshakes served in glass bottles. The menu is short and sweet and the specials and tea time snacks are listed on many blackboards scattered around the coffee shop. The sweet treats (my fave!), are invitingly displayed on tables both…

It’s a deal! Cape Town’s restaurant specials

Two for the price of one, free meals and discounts – sound good? Winter months and early spring months are restaurant specials months. Why? Capetonians are a funny bunch, as soon as it’s cold, we hibernate. So, I’ve compiled a list of restaurants in Cape Town currently holding specials.

Burgers at The Dog’s Bollocks

What do you get when you have a driveway, huge burgers, craft beer, jazz music and an owner with a persona just a big as the burgers? Yeah, The Dog’s Bollocks (no, it’s not a bad joke).
The Dog’s Bollocks is a small neighbourhood burger joint in Gardens. It’s situated in a covered driveway next to a mechanic so it looks pretty discrete unless you know what you’re looking for. Inside it’s furnished with old-school wire garden furniture with blankets for when it gets a bit chilly.

The Dog's Bollocks

The Dog’s Bollocks

Only 50 burgers are served each night so they have a different ordering system to a normal burger joint. When the whole table arrives, you write one name and the number of patrons on a chalk board (it’s actually a door) opposite the open plan kitchen. When Nigel, the owner and cook, gets to your order the whole table orders their burgers. Wait ten minutes and your burger is ready. Now, this is not just a burger, it is enormous and it’s kinda like a ‘would you like some burger patty with that salad?’ situation. It takes a while to figure out how to eat it. After watching other people tackle the monster of a burger I thought I had an eating game plan. Ahhh, wrong. I ended up nibbling the overflowing lettuce like a rabbit until I got to the actual burger. They’re goooood!

Would you like some burger with that salad?

It’s not just the burgers that make The Dog’s Bollocks a must visit, it’s the atmosphere and character of the place and the owner Nigel, but don’t expect luxury, it’s not meant to be luxurious.

Ask for a glass of water and you get the reply ‘See the wooden box? There are glasses in there. See the bathroom over there? There is water in there’, but don’t get me wrong, Nigel and his burger peeps are super friendly.

The Dog’s Bollocks also has its own craft beer. It’s something that shouldn’t be missed.

So, all in all, it’s a great evening out. It’s different, the burgers are good and they’re reasonably priced at R60 each for all burgers given their size.
Note: It probably is not the greatest place for a first date – there won’t be a second. There is no attractive way to eat a huge burger.

The Republic of Hout Bay: Bay Harbour Market and Snoekies

The perfect Sunday afternoon outing: a scenic drive through to Hout Bay to stroll through the Bay Harbour Market and then some deliciously fresh ol’ fish n chips at Snoekies. Sounds good right?

So first, why is Hout Bay jokingly called the Republic of Hout Bay you might ask? Here we go: A long time ago someone made his own passport which said he lived in the Republic of Hout Bay. He travelled the world with this passport (it was obviously waaaay before 9/11…) without any officials noticing his false document. The passports were actually made as part of a publicity stunt, but being able to travel the world with a fake passport is a shweet bonus.

Anywhoo, back to the Market and Snoekies… I’ve been to the Bay Harbour Market before, quite a while ago when it opened, but wow it has grown! The Bay Harbour Market is an old warehouse at the end of the harbour road. From afar the market looks small and insignificant, but walk inside and you’ve walked into another world – a world of art and craft, fashion, interior design, amazing food and live music. The bustling vibe makes it impossible not to have a good time.

The hustle and bustle

The hustle and bustle

The Bay Harbour Market aims to celebrate the ‘vibrancy, spirit and diversity of creativity and culture that make South Africa such a unique country’, and it’s done just that. Almost all goods sold at the market are made in South Africa. Many of the companies that sell at the market are involved in the development of creative and business skills in an effort to create sustainable businesses in Cape Town, which is pretty awesome.

While walking around it’s difficult to stop yourself from looking at every stall. Everything is just so amazing. There’s a stall called Eco-biz which sells bags made from recycled materials. They’re also quite proud to show you their ‘living gift’ which is a small tree packaged in a biodegradable tube. Other stalls sell clothing, quite a few of them selling linen clothing and amazing African styled t-shirts, soaps that smell so amazing it’s difficult not to want to eat them (childhood flashback), hand-made jewellery and even cushions. Then there’s the food section… Go hungry because there’s just too much to choose from.

Eco-biz

The Bay Harbour Market also showcases live local music. Recently Prime Circle played there, but they also have amazing up-and-coming artists who entertain the crowds.

It was difficult to leave, there’s just so much to see, buy, taste and listen to.

After the market experience we thought we had to have some good ol’ fish n’ chips while we’re in Hout Bay. Conveniently Snoekies is only a few metres away. Just to clarify Snoekies is not the South African version of Jersey Shore’s Snooki, it’s a seriously South African fish and chips place.

Snoekies is super popular with the Hout Bay locals so expect loud laughter, happy kids running around with tomato-sauced faces and no free tables! Once we had ordered from the counter we found a table outside in the sun. Amazing. Once our food arrived (I ordered hake and chips), so did the seagulls. Not so amazing. Anyway, our food was finished too soon for any bird to attack.

Due to Snoekies being really popular they have a high order turnover so you know that the fish you’re getting hasn’t been lying around for a while. There are also healthy options on the menu, not everything is fried in batter. There’s a calamari salad wrap which looks delicious. Snoekies prices are also very reasonable; hake and chips with a cool drink costs about R38.

So if you’re looking for a remarkable afternoon out, try the Bay Harbour Market and Snoekies for lunch. The views to and from Hout Bay are not so sore on the eyes either 🙂

Be a Tourist in your own City

Hello, goeie dag, molo, aweh (yes, now you know this is about Cape Town)

My name is Julia Cassar, I’m a third year Business Science student at The University of Cape Town (UCT). I’m a born and bred Capetonian, and I’m proud of it! When I’m not stuck indoors studying I play football for UCT at the foothills of Table Mountain (no joke).

So, why have I started a blog about being a tourist in your own city? When I was a kid my family’s long December holidays were often spent overseas in exotic places like the Seychelles, Mauritius or Thailand (notice a theme?). Yes, we had amazing holidays but as exciting as it was to go somewhere new it was exciting to come home, to Cape Town.

Charles Darwin obviously felt the same way about Cape Town in 1836:

‘This is a pretty and singular town; it lies at the foot of an enormous wall, which reaches into the clouds, and makes a most imposing barrier. Cape Town is a great inn, on the great highway to the east’

Uh ha, even back then they knew Cape Town was something special!

Upon our family travels we once met a Thai lady who asked us where we were from and when we told her we’re from Cape Town she asked us why we needed a holiday in Thailand when we could just stay at home. That’s when it really hit me. There is so much we don’t actually know about and appreciate as Capetonians.

We’ve all been to the typical tourist attractions (I hope, if not, do it!) so I’m on a journey to find the underground touristy stuff, from markets to eateries to local music and more.

To ensure that you’re up-to-date on what’s all the rage in Cape Town, subscribe to The Capetonian Tourist via email or RSS. You can also follow The Capetonian Tourist (@TheCTTourist) on Twitter too if this blog isn’t enough to appease your interest in the cool things the Mother City has to offer.

I’m always open to feedback. If you have somewhere interesting you think I should visit, let me know! Please feel free to comment, like and share!
